What You'll Need

Total estimated cost: $30-100 depending on equipment quality and what you already have.

RTL-SDR Dongle

Required
  • RTL2832U chipset with R820T/2 tuner
  • Approx. $20-30 USD
  • Look for "RTL-SDR V3" or "RTL-SDR Blog V3"

Pro tip: Models with TCXO (temperature compensated oscillator) offer better stability.

VHF Antenna

Required
  • Marine VHF antenna (162MHz)
  • Higher placement = better reception
  • $15-50 depending on quality

Pro tip: For beginners, the stock antenna that comes with many RTL-SDR kits will work to get started.

Computer

Required
  • Windows PC, Mac, Raspberry Pi (3+), or Linux machine
  • Internet connection recommended for data sharing
  • Low CPU usage - even older systems work well

Pro tip: A Raspberry Pi makes for an ideal 24/7 dedicated receiver.

Optional Equipment

Extension Cable

Optional

A low-loss coaxial cable to position your antenna higher or further from your computer.

Recommended: RG-58 for shorter runs, RG-8X for longer distances.

AIS Bandpass Filter

Optional

Equipment Considerations

More expensive SDR devices or antennas don't necessarily pay off. Location and height matter more than equipment cost. Basic RTL-SDR dongles perform very well for AIS reception.
